The power of the Human 'blain' :S

I have an exam tommorow at 2pm and though i have revised i just cant seem to be able to go through it again. Is it because subconsciously i know I've already done this last year? I really dont know. I was just wondering how powerful the human brain really is..

Let me explain with examples...

Have you guys ever experieced the urge to pee, i mean really needing to pee but you're in the car about a half hour away from home. Somehow, you will be able to control the urge. Isn't it? But then, the closer you get to your house, that urge comes back?

Or

You're in a room with a group of friends and you suddenly think of a song and then suddenly, a friend of yours starts to sing the song, or it plays in a radio thats switched on. I mean, it could be mere coincidence. But then again, what if its not coincidence?

Have you guys heard of the Placebo effect? I'll explain it with an example, A group of 100 patients all having high blood pressure are involved in an experiment. But they're not actually told about the experiment. Well, basically 50 patients are given the actual medication for high blood pressure and the other 50 are given the exact identical look alike pills but this have no medicinal value at all. (inert)

A month or so goes by and when the patients go back for their next appointments, The patients that have taken the inert pills actually have a significant improvement in blood pressure. Yes.. Studies have shown that the Placebo effect actually has a success rate of 60 to 90 percent.

So again this brings us to another question.. How did the patients recover? or improve in health..

The 'inert patients' must have thought they were getting the real medication and either believed or expected to be healed..

Again? I dont think it was a coincidence that the 50 'inert patients' recovered just like that...

Mr Chiam, my old employer and present friend once told me that the human brain is the most powerful tool a man has. If used properly he can use it to get what ever he wants. At that time, I thought he was mad. I used to drive him sometimes and suddenly out of the blue he would shout aloud something... ( an eg,..... I was driving Mr Chiam, Mrs Cynthia Bong and Bishop Cornelius Sim from Miri back to BSB one night. We were driving along the bypass road and it was very dark. Suddenly Mr Chiam spoke aloud and said."this road will be lighted up".. ) i honestly thought the stress was getting to him.

7 days later on my way to KB, i was shocked. The road was lighted up. Brand new lamp post with the distinct glow of orange neon. I didnt know what to think? How did he do that???

I told it to him at work that following week and he didn seem surprised at all. He said, if you think of something and believe in it and expect it, sooner or later you will get it. Then I started to recall the times my dad did that.. Well he never actually spoke out aloud like Mr Chiam, my dad sort of stared at something he wanted and i realised he always got his way.. There was a time the road connection to my house was all clayey and filled wf pebbles, basically it was a bad road. It was like that for almost 2 years. One day in 2004 my dad stopped by the side of the road and he just stared at the road. I didnt actually ask him what he was doing. Later at home i asked my mom why he did that and she said. "Your father doesnt want the road to be that way when he gets the Camry"..

A week later we had to collect the car from NBT KB, it was 2pm when we left the house, again we had to pass through the bad road. Anyway when we got back to BSB that evening at 6.30pm, I was shocked... Seriously shocked because the road was freshly tarred and all. I swear!! I Didnt know how he did it or what made the authorities do it on that particular day. It was as if the road was done so the car didn have to go over the bad road.

One day, during tea, I sat down and asked my dad, why he did what he did.. He said, Suresh i didnt know the road was going to be made that day. All i did was park the car there at the side of the road and i imagined myself in the camry driving pass the road and it was a brand new road. I expected the road to be done sooner or later. But hey, just like in my imagination the car never went over the bad road. Then he continued. This is what some people call Faith.. an act of believing something is gonna happen without it actually happening yet.

He then asked me.. Can you prove there is a GOD? i was like err huh??

He asked me.. did God create men or did men create God? as i am Christian i said God made men...

Then he asked me.. can you prove it? i Said the Bible says so.. He then continued... have you played chinese whispers? i said yes...

(well for those of you who havent heard of chinese whispers?.. its basiclly, you form a long chain of people, say 10 to 20 people in a row.. You then whisper a long sentence to the 1st person and ask him/her to pass it on with a whisper. The last person then either reads or writes it down and i can guarandammtee you it would be a completely different sentence)

He then said, if within 10minutes a sentence can change, imagine after 2000 years, what a sentence can change to become? I knew he made his point..

Then he started...... Science tells us the universe was created by the Big Bang theory.. The theory wouldn't be called a theory if it wasnt proved.. some asked, well assuming the Big Bang theory was indeed the creation of the universe.. What caused the Big Bang? That is where religion comes in. He said. "Look at the world..... " Why is there day and night? Day and night was here before time was invented.. Why does the waves stop at shore and not continue to go on? Why do rivers flow in the midst of dry land? We will never know and even if we know.. it doesnt answer anything. The diamond you see in a shop.. do you think it looked like that when it was in its mine? no. an external being took it and made it what it is. So all the wonderfull things you see on earth? The perfection in the design of human beings? or the beauty of Niagara Falls? you think it just happened? well the answer is an individual one.. If you ask an atheist, he'll say do you need God to be succesfull? No.... Does a person who believes not die? No... everyone dies.. Does a believer not get sick? No... he also does good just like believers. he doesnt steal, he doesnt sin.. So whats the big deal? So there you have it. You cant argue with him. can you? no...

So... In life Suresh.. Do what i do... Dont disturb people with their believes.. They all have brains.... Take care of yourself, your family and since you're my son, i'll tell you this.. Knowledge is never ending... and at the same time believing and expecting for things to happen will do no harm as long as you do no harm to others. See, see what happened with the camry incident.. i cant explain it but i know it works.. so why not do it..

So, yea... i still think theres more to this whole believing and expecting thingy.. but enough of that for now. I think i better go thru my notes one last time. haha

I've got loads of these! It's friggin ugly!!

Pityriasis rosea (say: pit-ih-rye-ah-sis row-see-ah) is a scaly, reddish-pink skin rash. It is most common in children and young adults, and usually occurs in spring and fall.

If you get this skin condition, you may feel like you have a cold at first. Then, a single scaly red spot may appear on your back or stomach. This is called a "herald patch." Smaller spots will develop on your body days to weeks later. These spots may itch badly. If the rash is on your back, it may have the shape of a Christmas tree.

What causes pityriasis rosea?
The cause of pityriasis rosea is uncertain. Some doctors believe that pityriasis rosea is caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Certain medicines also can cause this rash. Pityriasis rosea is not contagious, so people with this rash do not have to be kept away from other people.

What conditions look like pityriasis rosea?
The rash of pityriasis rosea can look like eczema, ringworm or psoriasis. Infection with syphilis also can cause a similar rash. If your doctor thinks you might have syphilis, he or she will order a blood test to find out.

How long does pityriasis rosea last?
Pityriasis rosea usually lasts 1 to 3 months and usually never comes back. Let your doctor know if the rash or itching lasts longer than 3 months.

How is pityriasis rosea treated?

The rash usually goes away on its own. No treatment can cure it, but medicine can help relieve the itching. Your doctor might have you use antihistamine pills, a steroid cream, calamine lotion or zinc oxide cream to relieve the itching. Sometimes people with pityriasis rosea have to take steroid pills to clear up their rash.

time..

What is time?
Is it the autumn leaves that change?
Or the snow that floats from the sky

What is Time?
Is it the air we breathe?
Or the wings that teach
The new born bird to fly

Who can tell?
I don’t know
Will we change?
Will we grow?

What is time?
Is it eternity
In heaven
Or just a hope for peace on earth

Where’s the time
Gone in a blink of an eye
But with every blink
a birth

We live
We learn
We love
In time
We give
We urn
We grow

In time

Time for change
Its time to care
It’s not too late
Don’t despair
Reach inside your heart

To find the joy and love
To share with all mankind
For all we know

All we have
Is time

blog blog blog!!

wow! can't believe the last time i blogged was June 2007! And it is because i haven't blogged for so long, i have too much of or not a single clue of what exactly to blog about!

Okay, fast forwarding to winter 2007. Winter Holiday has so far been great. Went to Rome, Venice and Prague with Shuv's family, hui ping, corn, michy ngu and chelly lian! I shall leave the pictures to do the talkin :)

ROME:

Ruins of Ancient Roma in the background

Colosseum with barcelonians

Inside the colosseum (built in the first century)

Italians' staple fooooodd

Feet in two different countries

The Vatican City! Vatican City is a tiny country on its own, enclaved in Rome.

She is Ping! She's quite a poser.

VENICE:

After Rome, we headed to Venice! Just an hour flight from Rome

A 'couply photo' =) Not meant to be mushy, but I LOVE HER :P

A ride on the Gondola. Very popular among tourists like us! The oarman go OOOOIIiiiiiii when approaching corners, just to alert other boatmen nearby. And following the culture, they only sing when a couple and no one else is onboard

Another island at the background.

A fun night in! Losers of 'wu gui' or hantu card game get drawn on the face!

PRAGUE:

Prague is famous for their clock. Seen in the picture is an astronomical clock

A cathederal in Prague Castle

In the old town square. The right tower is slightly wider than the left. Architecture accidents happen in the old days

Yes, it was freezing in Prague but we had fun!
